What Is Microsoft Dynamics AX?

Microsoft Dynamics AX is an ERP platform built for mid-market and large organizations with complex financial, manufacturing, and supply chain operations. Originally developed as Axapta in 1998, it was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 and evolved through several major releases like AX 4.0, AX 2009, and AX 2012 R3.

Every version of Dynamics AX has now reached end of life. This means the ERP does not receive any security patches, regulatory updates, or technical support.

What Is Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management?

Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management (FSCM) is the cloud-based successor to Dynamics AX. Originally released in 2016 as Dynamics 365 for Finance & Operations, Microsoft split it into two separate products in 2019: Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. The goal was to give users more flexibility to choose the license they need. However, in our experience, most companies tend to use both platforms together.

Finance covers general ledger, AP/AR, budgeting, multi-entity consolidation, and AI-driven forecasting. On the other hand, Supply Chain Management handles procurement, manufacturing, warehouse management, demand planning, and transportation.

What are the differences between Dynamics AX & Dynamics 365?

If you’re coming from Dynamics AX, Dynamics 365 FSCM will feel familiar. It’s built on the same lineage, with the same foundation in financial management, manufacturing, and supply chain operations that made AX a strong platform. But, as Kevin puts it, Dynamics 365 has significantly expanded capabilities.

Cloud-first architecture vs. on-premises infrastructure

Dynamics AX was built for on-prem. Businesses are responsible for servers, hosting, maintenance, storage, upgrades, and security.

Dynamics 365 FSCM runs entirely on Microsoft Azure as a SaaS platform, which means there are no on-premises servers to maintain. Microsoft manages the infrastructure, security, and upgrades automatically, and the cost is bundled into the licensing fee. This makes Dynamics 365 FSCM much more cost effective.

Continuous, automatic updates vs. static release cycles

Dynamics AX followed a static release cycle, with major versions rolling out every few years. Dynamics 365 FSCM replaces that cycle with continuous, automatic updates.

Much stronger integration capabilities

Dynamics AX handled integrations through the Application Integration Framework (AIF) and, in many environments, direct database calls and point-to-point connections. They worked, but they were rigid and difficult to scale or troubleshoot.

Dynamics 365 FSCM is built for a connected ecosystem. An improved, browser-based user experience

Dynamics AX relied on a desktop client with multi-click navigation and form layouts designed in the late 2000s.

Dynamics 365 FSCM is entirely browser-based, with no client install. Users access the system from any device with a web browser, and the interface is organized around role-based workspaces. Kevin flags the improved user experience as a tangible upgrade, and from an adoption standpoint, it helps manage resistance to change.

An expanded feature set across finance, supply chain, planning & automation

Dynamics AX relied on a Dynamics AX covered core ERP well, but the platform’s feature set was mostly static between major releases, and expanding into areas like advanced planning or automation usually meant third-party add-ons.

Dynamics 365 FSCM ships with a significantly broader feature set out of the box. Finance capabilities now include AI-driven forecasting, automated reconciliation, and advanced budgeting. Supply Chain Management covers demand planning, warehouse optimization, and transportation management with deeper intelligence built in. Since the platform receives continuous updates, the feature set keeps growing. This means the gap between what Dynamics AX offered and what Dynamics 365 delivers only widens over time.

Native integrations with Power BI & Microsoft Power Platform

Dynamics 365 FSCM connects natively with Microsoft Power BI, Power Automate, Power Apps, and Dataverse. In practice, this means embedded Power BI dashboards inside workspaces, automated workflows triggered by ERP events without code, and lightweight business apps built in Power Apps that pull directly from your Dynamics 365 data.

Built-in Telemetry, monitoring & lifecycle tooling

Managing a Dynamics AX environment meant monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating deployments largely through manual processes and third-party tools.

Dynamics 365 FSCM includes Lifecycle Services (LCS), a dedicated portal for environment management, deployment planning, performance monitoring, and issue diagnostics. It provides built-in telemetry that tracks system health, usage patterns, and potential issues.

Licensing & total cost of ownership: CapEx vs. OpEx

Dynamics AX may seem cheaper because it starts with a one-time perpetual license. But, eventually, you also cover the cost of servers, security, storage, and upgrades. This is a CapEx-heavy model with a more unpredictable spend.

Dynamics 365 FSCM, on the other hand, shifts the model to OpEx. Infrastructure, security, updates, and hosting are all bundled into a predictable per-user, per-month subscription.
