Is Microsoft Dynamics GP going away? Many of our customers and the GP community are asking this question, confused by the rumors and misinformation around the future of Dynamics GP.  The short answer to the question is no, Dynamics GP is not being discontinued.

Microsoft has committed to supporting the product through 2028 and beyond under the new Modern Lifecycle Policy. To contradict the many false narratives around Dynamics GP, we put together this blog post to provide clarity on the very bright future of the product.

What is the Modern Lifecycle?

Starting with Dynamics GP 18.2, Dynamics GP releases follow Microsoft’s new Modern Lifecycle Policy, which also governs the company’s newer Dynamics 365 products.

The Modern Lifecycle Policy provides continuous support and servicing, including hotfixes and tax updates, without any end-of-support dates. To maintain support for your product, all you must do is ‘stay current’ by implementing at least one of the three, all-inclusive Dynamics GP updates, scheduled for June, October, and December of each year.

How Long will Microsoft Support Dynamics GP?

Microsoft will continue to provide active updates and support for Dynamics GP under the new Modern Lifecycle Policy through 2028 and beyond.

Mike Morton, Vice President of Dynamics 365 Business Central at Microsoft, and leader of the company’s SMB business applications, including GP and SL, further reiterated a commitment to Dynamics GP in a recent social post.

“Microsoft is fully committed to supporting our Dynamics GP customers. This will include new releases (e.g., 18.6, 18.7, 18.8, …) for the foreseeable future on the same timeline and schedule as we have done in the past several years, as outlined in the GP Modern Support Lifecycle. If you are an existing GP customer, you can be confident in using Dynamics GP to run your business for years to come.”

New Dynamics GP releases will feature regulatory (tax), security updates, and hotfixes, ensuring GP remains up to date. They will also include updates in usability, reliability, addressing top customer issues, and other areas that are critical in ensuring businesses run successfully on GP.

The Growing GP Partner Ecosystem

By bringing Dynamics GP into the Modern Lifecycle fold, Microsoft has clearly demonstrated its commitment to updating and supporting the product. Besides, GP is further supported and enhanced by a thriving community, fueled by thousands of partners and ISV companies that are still adding value and features to a mature ERP that Microsoft has committed to, through 2028. Microsoft acknowledges the thriving GP community, stating, “The Dynamics GP partner ecosystem has always been strong and will continue to release new add-ons that extend Dynamics GP.”

GraVoc was a recent sponsor and presenter at the October 2022 Community Summit North America, which is the largest independent gathering of the Microsoft Business Applications user ecosystem. We can tell you firsthand that the GP community is continuing to grow and evolve with new GP solutions and enhancements being developed every day. The Power Platform is further enabling an unlimited number of new ways to interact and report on GP data. Pairing Dynamics GP with Power Platform is the future for GP users.

So, if you are a Dynamics GP user, rest assured because GP is not going away! You can continue to use and leverage your GP system to do business for years to come! Other companies or competitors might tell you that Microsoft is planning to retire GP in an effort to scare you into switching to a different ERP platform, but these are simply rumors, clearly negated by Microsoft’s lifecycle roadmap for GP.
