This past October, WordPress held its 9th annual State of the Word address in San Francisco, CA . Matt Mullenweg, creator of WordPress, discussed how the content management systems’ popularity has significantly grown over the past year. To date, WordPress is the most used content management system, powering 23% of the world’s websites. Web developers from around the world have been increasingly using WordPress to build their websites, utilizing their collection of 34k plugins and 2.7k themes. Results from a survey taken by WordPress indicate that out of 33k surveyors, 7,549 people make their living by designing and building WordPress powered sites.
At the conclusion of his address, Matt made a final statement about how the goal of WordPress is to democratize publishing, meaning making it accessible for everyone. WordPress is a community with hundreds of contributors that everyone from every corner of the world can enjoy. Matt’s final statement truly defined and explained the vision of WordPress and how, as a community, we can continue to contribute to it and watch it grow.
